Postdoctoral Fellow and Co-Director of Democracy Lab
Steph Buongiorno is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Data and Decision Sciences and the co-director of Democracy Lab at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Buongiorno’s research focuses on computational text analysis, data collection, and applied data science techniques and high-performance computing (HPC) in fields such as digital history. At Emory she leads several major initiatives, including Democracy Viewer, a text mining app for analyzing language usage and change over time.
Dr. Buongiorno is the author of a forthcoming book, Text Mining for Historical Analysis, under contract with Cambridge University Press. Her work on knowledge graphs and AI has been published by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).
She holds a PhD in Applied Science from Southern Methodist University’s Lyle School of Engineering in Dallas, Texas.
